All of Aspen Will Be Revealed

This July, the Aspen Universe will be plunged into its biggest crossover event ever, bringing the popular characters Soulfire and Fathom together for an event that will change the Aspen world forever. Writers Joshua Hale Fialkov  and J.T. Krul joined us for a short Q&A on this upcoming event.

Aspen Universe: Revelations #1 (MAY161156) is in comic shops July 13.

Article ImagePREVIEWSworld: Will Aspen Universe: Revelations #1 (MAY161156) be a great jumping-on point for new readers?

J.T. Krul: Absolutely! We've designed the story to start with the basic core characters and concepts of the Soulfire and Fathom universes and unfold from there, bringing in more and more of their respective worlds as we ratchet up the tension and drama throughout the series. In fact, one of the reasons we wanted to have Josh involved (aside from being a fantastic writer) was to have someone heavily involved who wasn't so steeped in the overall mythos of the two books. He really helped making sure the story made for an easy jumping-on point.

Joshua Hale Fialkov: That being said, it was extremely important to everyone involved that we stay true to the characters and the history that Michael Turner created. We're determined to keep both sides of the equation happy.

PREVIEWSworld: How is this the biggest event in Aspen Comics history?

J.T. Krul: Quite simply, for the first time in the entire history of the company, Aspen is doing a crossover. And, it's not just a run-of-the-mill typical crossover. We are bringing the two bestselling flagship properties together in a way that will forever alter the worlds moving forward.

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Beyond that, J.T. and the gang at Aspen have been slowly seeding this into the stories for a long time. This is the culmination of literally years of work.

PREVIEWSworld: Can we expect lasting effects from this new world-colliding story?

J.T. Krul: You can indeed! That’s the whole reason for doing this story in the first place. This isn’t an alternate universe tale. This isn’t an “Elseworlds” tale! This isn’t a “what if” adventure!

Joshua Hale Fialkov: And we wanted to make sure that it had a long, heartfelt, and meaningful impact on the books.

J.T. Krul: This is an epic event that will rock the two worlds to their very cores and lay the foundation for a more cohesive universe that will expand and evolve from this point forward.

PREVIEWSworld: What can devoted Aspen fans expect from this crossover event?

J.T. Krul: For long time Aspen readers, they can expect the unexpected. From the very first issue, a major revelation (hence the title!) will change everything they thought they knew about both Soulfire and Fathom. It will feature a Who’s Who of both books, as they struggle against a threat that spans the boundaries of time and space. Our readers have been with us through all the drama and adventure, both on the page and off, and this is a way for us to thank them with the kind of no-holds-barred story they’ve been clamoring for over the years. Plus, it’s a way for us to show everyone that we have big plans in store — not just for this story, but for beyond as well.

PREVIEWSworld: What new changes can you tease for new and longtime readers alike?

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Well, there’s one really big one, which we don’t want to spoil. What can we say without spoiling things?

J.T. Krul: Aspen Matthews will see her world suffering like never before, as the entire planet has been transformed into a virtual wasteland. Tired and alone, she treks the deserted realms, looking for signs of her people — or signs of any life for that matter. And what she discovers will show her that all may not be lost, but she’ll have to go further than she ever dreamed if she is to have any hope of saving her world.

Joshua Hale Fialkov: And she meets someone she thinks she knows, but she has no idea who it really is.

PREVIEWSworld: Will this five-issue mini-series serve as the starting point for the all-new Aspen Universe this summer?

J.T. Krul: Revelations is both a culmination of everything that has come before and a beginning of an entirely new chapter, not just for Fathom and Soulfire, but for Aspen itself. We are doing everything we can to make this a great time to explore our worlds and climb aboard for a bright and exciting future.

Joshua Hale Fialkov: Part of what attracted me to the project was getting a chance to really build the ground rules that allow us to go out and build an even stronger, better Aspen Comics than ever before.
