Everything You Need To Know About 'Wrong Earth: Purple'
Mar 31, 2022
Ahoy Comics presents a series of reality-shattering one-shots within the Wrong Earth multiverse!
Back in 2019, Ahoy Comics released the series Wrong Earth! Introducing comic readers to caped crusaders Dragonfly and Dragonflyman. Two mirror images with vastly different approaches to crime-fighting. But that's just the beginning...
Jump forward to 2022 and Ahoy Comics is taking the Wrong Earth multiverse to the 1980s in Wrong Earth: Purple. Written by Stuart Moore with stunning art and color by Fred Harper, this is just one of five Wrong Earth specials looking to add a new perspective to a series already loaded with alternate realities.
In the following interview, writer Stuart Moore gives you a glimpse into the Wrong Earth event of 2022!
How did you get involved with this series of Wrong Earth specials?
When we decided to do a series of one-shots set in the Wrong Earth cosmos, my mind immediately jumped to an idea that nobody else had thought of. Thankfully, Tom Peyer decided it fit in with the framework he and Jamal Igle had created.
For those unfamiliar, what is the concept behind the overall Wrong Earth series?
It’s the story of two parallel crimefighters, one from a cheery 1960s world and the other from a dark, dystopian, modern-comics-style Earth. But there’s room inside the concept for other parallel worlds, which is where our story comes in.
What is the story inside your particular one shot?
The two Wrong Earth heroes, Dragonfly and Dragonflyman, share an alter ego: Richard Fame, rich industrialist. That means one thing on Earth-Alpha, where authorities wear shiny badges and are generally trusted, and something else on gritty Earth-Omega. Our story explores yet another side of the character by taking you to a third Earth, where Greed Is Good and the 1980s never ended. On this world, Richard Fame, the Dragon-Fly, rules over a massive financial empire, bares his soul, and is ultimately forced to question his place in the world.
By the way, the two “regular” Dragonfly(men) also appear in this story. Briefly. Sort of.
What do you hope to bring to the expanded Wrong Earth universe?
We’re looking to evoke a time when vigilantes and anti-heroes really broke out into the mainstream when brilliant suicidal architects designed major motion pictures. A time of wailing saxophones and giant shoulder pads, of the War on Drugs and molded rubber super-suits. And dark, soul-searching emotions. After you read this book, you might just have to purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka.
Between the Dragonfly reality and the Dragonflyman reality, which world would you rather live in?
They’re both pretty flawed! And so is Earth-Kappa, the world of our book. But then, every reality has its problems.
What will Wrong Earth fans get out of this?
I hope they like the story, of course. But I should mention that Fred Harper, my collaborator, has really outdone himself. His architecture is stunning, his characters expressive and menacing, and his color work is some of the most subtle and rich I’ve ever seen in comics. Just wait till you see the psychedelic trip scene.
